Article: Hanson frames catchy songs in sibling harmony

October 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

If Sunday night’s concert at House of Blues was any indication of Hanson’s popularity and talent, it’s safe to say the pop trio hasn’t lost its touch. More than a decade after their hit song, “MMMBop” came out, the Hanson brothers have maintained much of the same rhythm, energy and harmony that characterized their debut album, Middle of Nowhere.

The brothers played some of their older hits, including “MMMBop” and “Where’s the Love,” as well as songs from their latest album, The Walk, released last July.

Among the impressive songs was “One More,” which showcased strong vocals from Taylor, 25, and Isaac, 27. It was one of the few songs that didn’t seem overpowered by instrumentals, and it provided a welcome diversion from the group’s faster, more energetic tunes.

The brothers, originally from Tulsa, Okla., took turns sharing the spotlight. Isaac added acoustic guitar, giving a Doobie Brothers feel to the group’s music.

The group’s youngest member, Zach, 22, performed the night’s only solo. It would have seemed more engaging if his piano hadn’t been tucked away to the side of the stage.

Taylor played the role of frontman, constantly asking for fans’ participation. With frequent “oh oh oh’s” and “na na na’s” dotting the lyrics of the group’s songs, it wasn’t difficult for fans to follow Taylor’s cues and sing along.

“So you stuck with us for a decade,” Taylor said shortly before the group launched into “MMMBop.” “We’re going to take you back to the beginning.”

They did just that, proving they haven’t lost their knack for playing catchy tunes together in a wholesome, brotherly way.

Article: Music Box: Outspoken Atmosphere in Baltimore tonight

The brothers Hanson come to perform at Rams Head Live Wednesday (doors 7 p.m. – all ages welcome). Hanson has been called a more modern version of ’70s boy bands such as the Jackson 5.

Their initial success forshadowed the rise of teen pop stars such as Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC.

Now a bit further down the line, the Hanson brothers strive to simply be considered as the excellent musicians they really are.

In recent years they’ve worked with Bob Weir, Jonny Lang, John Popper, Matthew Sweet and the Dust Brothers in the effort to shed their boy band image.

Article: Sibling Rivalry

October 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Before the Jonas Brothers, there was Hanson, a sugary pop group featuring three brothers from Oklahoma who could play instruments and sing. That sibling trio is still around, and even though you may only think of Hanson as the act responsible for “MMMbop,” it’s worth giving the group a chance when it plays at Showcase Live! tonight and tomorrow. Supposedly the band’s sound is worthy of adult ears; the new album, “The Walk,” is even influenced by Radiohead. Everybody’s got to grow up sometime. 8 p.m. both nights. $30. Showcase Live! at Patriot Place, 23 Patriot Place, Foxborough, 617-931-2000. www.ticketmaster.com

Article: Talking the talk and walking the walk with Hanson

October 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I am a Fanson and not ashamed to say it. You may be wondering what a Fanson is – it’s a Hanson fan, a unique breed of fan who know what “MMMBop” really means, who have spent the past 11 years following the career of a band that has changed many lives.

My favorite trio of blond, Oklahoma-bred brothers returned to Orlando last Thursday as part of the Walk Around the World Tour. After interviewing eldest brother Isaac on the phone the week before, I was even more pumped to not only go to another Hanson concert, but to also cover it for the Future.

After a trip to Africa a few years back, the band has been set on raising as much awareness as they can for poverty and AIDS in the country. For the past year, the band has hosted one-mile walks in each city they visit during the tour. They encourage fans to walk barefoot to see what it’s like not to have a pair of shoes.

I arrived at House of Blues in Downtown Disney just as the crowd was coming together to take The Walk. Hanson’s fan base has not changed much over the last decade – it has just grown up. Almost every fan there was a 20-something woman, not unlike myself, and a few boyfriends/husbands who were probably dragged there against their will.

After what seemed like an eternity (actual time: 10 minutes), the brothers came out, megaphones blazing, ready to lead us around the parking lots of Downtown Disney. It was like a stampede and everyone had their cameras out, trying to get the perfect shot of Isaac, 27, Taylor, 25, and Zac, 22.

Passers-by stopped and marveled at the three brothers surrounded by the hoard of girls.

“Isn’t that the Jonas Brothers?” I heard one middle-aged man ask a fan.

The fan looked disgusted. “No. It’s Hanson,” she said.

I grabbed my friend and dragged her along, trying to get close to Zac, the drummer of the band and my personal favorite. Taylor had other plans and hopped on a light post, bringing The Walk to a screeching halt.

“The Walk has grown because of you guys,” Taylor said. “Last year the goal was to just give shoes. Now, because of encouragement from people like you all over the country and for that matter all over the world … we’ve come up with other ideas and ways you can make your mile count.”
